Merdekaaa!!! Merdekaaa!!!

Its that time of the year again, everyone’s hopping on the commercial bandwagon to celebrate our Hari Merdeka, or in English, Independence Day. Independence? Yes, the day we celebrate the official signing over of the country’s rights to our forefathers who fought for it, to free ourselves from the yoke of oppression from the British Empire. Yes, we celebrate the 31st of August as the day we were free! Free! Yeah right, free… It will be the 49th Anniversary of Malaysia’s independence from being just another foreign colony, what do we have to show for it? Where is our pride in our nation? Where are we as a people? Now, we have ‘Merdeka Sale! Only until 31st
August!’ every freaking year for the whole freaking month of August. Don’t get me wrong, to some people ‘SALE‘ is a good four-letter word. But I feel that we’re not as patriotic as we used to be, we’ve lost the pride in the nation that has put us on the world map, we’re no longer a developing or a 3rd world country, I mean come on man, back in ‘97 we just thumbed our noses at the IMF and the World Bank (biggest thieves on the whole planet I tell you) due to the strength of our leader (then). I for one, am proud that we managed to stand tall despite the hardship we were facing with the Asian Economic Crisis of 1997. But I’m talking about way back when, when people still remember that some people DIED to make this country a real country, that we’re nobody’s lapdog (a couple of 1st world nations come to mind) and that in this region, we’re the most politically and economically stable, and hell yeah! I sure wanna keep it that way! So have pride in yourself and this fine country we live in (no fines, duit kopi only, but even that is changing), revel in the fact that we can get piping hot, FRESHLY COOKED food at any damn time of the day or night that we want, that its a bloody short walk away, that we can insult a friend of another ethnic group with a racial slur to his face and have him laugh his ass off and insult you right back, that we have freedom to practice our religions (or not) as we see fit. That we are MALAYSIAN! Have a good and happy Hari Merdeka ke-49 or as they say in the lingua franca of the world: 49th Independence Day.
